A Dream Cabin Renovation: From Weekend Retreat to Full-Time Haven
A Dream Cabin Renovation: From Weekend Retreat to Full-Time Haven
When Doug and Tim purchased their small, vintage cabin on Livonia Mountain, Loganton, PA, it was intended to be a weekend retreat for Penn State tailgating season. With the help from Timberhaven Log & Timber Homes, they embarked on a complete renovation journey, transforming their modest cabin into a stunning residence, which has become home.
The renovation project included a comprehensive overhaul of the existing cabin and a significant timber frame addition. Timberhaven’s Premium-Grade Kiln-Dried White Pine Engineered Timbers were chosen for the custom-designed timber framework, ensuring the highest quality and durability. The exterior was adorned with Kiln-Dried Log Siding, establishing a cohesive look, maintaining the rustic charm while upgrading the aesthetic appeal. This helped Doug and Tim achieve both a log (outside) and timber frame (inside) look and feel.
Doug and Tim worked closely with Timberhaven to custom design this unique project, ensuring every element was seamlessly integrated. Doug and Lynda Tompkins, Timberhaven’s principal, recalled the complexity of the roof system specifically, indicating, “THAT was fun to figure out!” The pre-existing cabin and the new large addition were meticulously planned to flow together harmoniously, both inside and out. The result is a cohesive and stunning custom home that embodies both comfort and style.
The interior boasts an open floor plan that merges the old and new spaces flawlessly. The timber frame addition brings a sense of grandeur with its cathedral ceilings, comprehensive roof system and natural White Pine exposed beams. All the while, the original cabin retains its cozy, intimate feel with White Pine elements incorporated throughout including a stair system, ceiling finish, window and door trim and more. Every detail was carefully considered, from the layout and design to the choice of materials, creating a space that is both functional and beautiful.
Doug and Tim are thrilled with their Timberhaven project. Their peaceful location in Loganton provides a serene backdrop for their new custom home where two different streams flow through the wooded property and the only noise that can be heard is from the wildlife itself. Doug and Tim agree the back porch is their favorite “room”. Their morning java has never tasted so good than when enjoyed outdoors, four-legged friends by their sides, birds chirping in their ears… It’s no wonder what started as a weekend retreat has now become their dream residence, and they can’t wait to move in full-time.
In a recent message from Doug, he shared, “Lynda, thank you so much for all that you and Timberhaven have accomplished. With the sad news of David’s passing, we weren’t sure how things would progress during construction, but you and Timberhaven stepped in and went the extra mile to assist us in transforming the existing cabin and truly integrate it with the addition you helped us create. We still remark about some of the great ideas you came up with that we honestly couldn’t live without, like moving the staircase, and your unique details that solved geometry issues as we tied into the existing cabin.”
This renovation is a testament to Timberhaven’s expertise and dedication to creating high-quality, custom-designed homes. Doug and Tim’s journey from tailgating weekends to full-time mountain living showcases the transformative power of a well-executed renovation, blending tradition with modern comfort in perfect harmony.
In reflecting on the successful completion of this project, we find it imperative to honor the contributions of our esteemed sales representative, David Gray. David’s unwavering dedication and expertise were instrumental in driving this project forward, and his passion and pride in his work were evident in every detail. Unexpectedly, David passed away during the construction of this cabin, but his memory lives on through the projects he championed. We are profoundly grateful for David’s invaluable contributions and remain inspired by his memory. We know he would be so proud and happy for you, Doug and Tim.
