Nature Friendly: Going Green
Here at Timberhaven Log & Timber Homes we know that “going green” has become a core concept of the home manufacturing industry — modern log homes included. This is why we encourage our customers to explore the options that can make their home beautiful, comfortable, and eco-friendly.
Making Your Home Naturally Green
Decisions, decisions, decisions — the process of building a new home is certainly full of them! As you are deciding on the features for your new log home or timber frame home, it is also the best time to make sure some of those include green features. Not only will you reap the benefit of lower energy costs, but your home will be more marketable should you ever want to sell in the future.
Below are 5 top ways you can green up your home. Whether you choose one or all, it’s a step in the right direction.
- Install energy-efficient heating and cooling system(s). Did you know half of your energy bill goes toward heating and cooling your home? A good way to cut that bill back is to install an upgraded HVAC system and programmable thermostats. Radiant-floor heating and geothermal heat pumps can also increase the efficiency of your home.
- Harness the power of the sun. Depending on where you build, your home could be in the prime spot for using solar power to heat water and provide electricity. The good news is that newer-designed solar panels are becoming more efficient and more affordable, making them even more desirable.
- Choose the best windows possible. Windows have come a really long way. Now, more than ever, it’s easy to find Energy Star-rated windows including low-E glass, double- and triple-pane glass, windows with gas between the panes, and more.
- Build with eco-friendly materials. When possible, opt for sustainable materials to beautify your home. This can include materials that are recycled, non-toxic, quickly renewable, locally sourced, and sustainably-harvested.
- Be mindful of your landscaping. Curb appeal is an important factor when building a home. Maybe even more than you realized. The plants you choose and where you place them can really make a difference regarding the efficiency and greenness of your home! In general, choosing native plants for your landscaping will ensure their ability to thrive. Plus, they typically don’t need fertilizer or pesticides, which reduces the amount of pollutants that can contaminate groundwater. When it comes to planting deciduous trees, consider planting them on the western and southern sides of your home. In the summer, the fullness of the leaves will help cool your home by blocking the sun’s rays. In the winter, the lack of leaves will allow the sun to shine in, naturally warming your home.
It might seem that adding green features seems a little pricey up front — and you’d be right. In the long run, however, those reduced energy bills will bring about big savings. More importantly, you’ll be contributing to the protection of the environment for future generations. If you ask us, that’s pretty special.
